Lockheed Martin has showcased a new counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) solution in a recent field demonstration, highlighting its ability to detect, track, and mitigate threats from small drones, including swarms. The event marked the companyfirst in a planned series of demonstrations aimed at presenting a layered defence system designed for adaptability and integration with other platforms.
The system features an open-architecture design that combines command and control (C2) capabilities with artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled detection and tracking software, low-cost sensors, and various effectors. According to the company, the modular nature of the system allows for rapid deployment and flexibility in responding to evolving threats.
“Integrating diverse sensors through a user-optimized command and control (C2) system helps simplify threat identification, and we have the complementary technology offerings to convert collected data into actionable information,” said Tyler Griffin, C-UAS director at Lockheed Martin.
“Our open architecture approach offers an agile, layered defense solution that accelerates outcomes relative to this dynamic threat. This foundational demo highlights how we can deliver the mission today and sets the stage for what Lockheed Martin and our partners will deliver in weeks and months ahead,” he added.
The system incorporates AI-driven software to enhance threat detection, tracking, and mitigation, improving operator efficiency in handling both single threats and drone swarms. The demonstration successfully showcased the system's ability to track and counter small UAS, highlighting its scalability and integration potential.
Lockheed Martin emphasised the importance of rapid coordination in countering drone threats, as operators have only a few minutes to respond. The system's sensors are designed to track multiple small, low-flying drones and communicate instantly with C2 systems, which classify threats, assign appropriate countermeasures, and manage multiple engagements simultaneously.
The company stated that its open-architecture approach allows customers to integrate advanced technologies while leveraging its experience in AI-driven software and systems integration to address emerging threats.
