Italian Army Orders Centauro II Armoured Vehicles

The Italian Army has placed a contract with Iveco – Oto Melara Consortium (CIO), which includes Iveco Defence Vehicles for the first tranche of ten Centauro II vehicles.

 

The order is worth 159 million Euros and the contract value to Leonardo is approximately 92 million Euros and another 65 million Euros will go to Iveco Defence Vehicles.

 

Leonardo will be responsible for the development and integration of the complete turret defence system, including the observation, targeting and communications systems.

 

The Centauro II has been named as “New Blindo Centauro” by the Italian Army and a total of 136 units will be acquired.

 

As compared to the previous Centauro I, the Centauro II features major improvements in terms of power, observation capability, mobility, ergonomics, firing range, communication and maximum crew protection.

 

The 8×8 Centauro II is powered by a new power pack delivering over 700hp.

 

The vehicle also features an entirely digital system and a new generation turret mounting with a 120 mm gun.
