KONGSBERG Becomes Major Partner for Qatar’s VBCI Programme

KONGSBERG will supply Qatar with tower solutions, and digitalization and communication solutions for 490 Nexter VBCI armoured vehicles being acquired by the nation.

KONGSBERG will provide its “PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Station” and “Medium Caliber Turret” to the programme.

The announcement was made at the DIMDEX exhibition and the next steps in the process will be detailing and final negotiations prior to signing the final contract for the programme.

KONGSBERG has established a new company named BK Systems in partnership with Barzan Holdings to further its in-country presence and cooperation, which according to KONGSBERG has a potential to reach approximately NOK 15 billion over the next eight years.

“BK Systems will be an important company for the development of technology and solutions within defence, digitalization and maritime industry in Qatar. The establishment of this cooperation shows that Norwegian high-tech industry is world-leading and in demand. We see considerable opportunities and potential for Norwegian industry and technology development with this establishment,” said Geir Håøy, President and CEO of KONGSBERG.

The Qatari order will result in earnings of approximately 15 billion kroner for KONGSBERG and require an estimated 15,000 Norwegian man-labour years and involve more than 170 small and medium sized sub-suppliers.

The PROTECTOR Remote Weapon Station was developed for the Norwegian armed forces by KONGSBERG in the latter half of the 90s.

Approximately 20,000 systems have now been delivered by KONGSBERG to 19 countries.
