Leonardo Brings Best in Class Offerings

: Apr 24, 2019 - : 9:13 am

Italian defence conglomerate Leonardo is focusing on its helicopter, aircraft and radar product lines at the ongoing FAMEX, as it considers the Latin American market as one of strategic importance.

The company recently opened a new corporate office in Mexico City, as it looks for further growth in the country, where more than 80 of its helicopters are operational. The company believes that that prospects for the AW159 and AW139M for the Mexican Navy and Mexican Air Force respectively, are encouraging.

Latin American countries are also showing strong interest in acquiring new generation radars for security and defence. The company is offering its RAT31 DL ground- based air defence radar for such needs. The advanced, L-band, solid state solution for 3D surveillance has an effective range of over 470 km and is NATO’s primary air defence sensor. Amongst the customers for the RAT31 DL are Italy, Turkey, Poland, Spain, Hungary, Norway, the Czech Republic and Germany.

Leonardo remains bullish on the prospects in Latin America for its C-27J ‘Spartan’ multi-mission transport aircraft, which was recently used by Peru to support the population affected by El Nino.

The C-27J aircraft is being touted by Leonardo as the perfect solution to respond to emergencies thanks to its ability to land on unprepared runways and also sandy or icy surfaces.

The multi-mission credentials of the air- craft are further enhanced by the C-27J’s enhanced firefighter configuration with a roll-on/roll-off Fire Attack System (FAS) made by Simplex Aerospace. This variant of the C-27J, affords significantly lower acquisition and operating costs than a dedicated firefighting platform.
