Malaysia Airlines Says No Plan for A380 Reconfiguration

: Jun 5, 2018 - : 3:03 am

Malaysia Airlines said it will not change the configurations of its Airbus A380 fleet to a higher density configuration with up to 700 seats.

The Malaysian national carrier had initially planned to reconfigure its A380 fleet to add more capacity, which would make them more suited for the charter market.

According to a Centre For Aviation report, the airline intends to set up a charter unit for the A380s, mainly for Hajj and Umrah pilgrimage traffic to the Middle East. The details regarding the charter unit will be announced soon.

Malaysia Airlines chief executive officer Captiain Izham Ismail said keeping the current configuration will allow the A380s to be used on certain routes in the airline’s network during peak periods. He added that the airline will continue to operate all six A380s in the existing three class 486 and 494 seat configurations.

The company recently signed a three-year agreement with Andalusia Travel & Tours to transport Malaysia pilgrims to Medina and Jeddah from August 2018 to 2021, using their A380s.

The agreement will be transferred to Malaysia Airlines’ charter unit after it meets all regulatory and licensing requirements in Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
