Embraer Expands India Ops

India : May 31, 2025 - : 2:34 pm

Brazilian aerospace and defense major Embraer has announced the establishment of a wholly-owned subsidiary in India, underscoring its long-term commitment to the country’s rapidly evolving aerospace and defense sector.

The new entity will be headquartered at AeroCity in New Delhi, marking a strategic milestone in the company’s expansion plans.

The Indian subsidiary will strengthen Embraer’s presence across multiple domains — defense, commercial aviation, business aviation, services and support, and the emerging urban air mobility segment. The company is actively building its team in India, with a focus on corporate functions and specialized areas such as procurement, supply chain, and engineering.

“India is a key market for Embraer, and this expansion demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the country,” said Francisco Gomes Neto, President & CEO of Embraer. “We are excited to deepen our collaboration with the Indian aerospace and defense industry, leveraging our expertise and technology to contribute to the nation’s growth and the Make in India campaign.”

Embraer already maintains a strong footprint in the Indian market, with nearly 50 aircraft and 11 different types currently in operation across commercial, defense, and business aviation sectors. These are supported by Embraer’s in-country services and maintenance network.

The company’s latest move also highlights growing ties between Brazil and India in aerospace collaboration. Embraer will participate in the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025 in New Delhi, further cementing its engagement with India’s aviation ecosystem.

This announcement follows a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in February 2024 between Embraer Defense & Security and Mahindra Defence Systems. The MoU aims to jointly explore the Indian Air Force’s Medium Transport Aircraft (MTA) program with Embraer’s C-390 Millennium platform.

The C-390 Millennium is a new-generation, multi-mission tactical transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 26 tons of cargo. It offers superior performance with speeds up to 470 knots and a broad range of mission capabilities, including air-to-air refueling, troop and cargo transport, medical evacuation, humanitarian relief, search and rescue, and firefighting.

In commercial aviation, Embraer’s E-Jets family of regional and small narrowbody aircraft is seen as a key enabler for expanding air connectivity to underserved tier 2 and tier 3 cities in India. The company’s aircraft are helping to unlock new ‘blue ocean’ opportunities and support the country’s ambition of becoming a global aviation hub.

The E-Jets have already proven their value in India through operators like Star Air, which flies E175 and ERJ145 aircraft. Positioned between turboprops and larger narrowbody jets, the E-Jets offer the right size and range to optimize route economics on thinner regional sectors.

In the defense sector, Embraer aircraft in operation with Indian forces include the Legacy 600 for VIP transport, used by the Indian Air Force and Border Security Force, and the ‘Netra’ airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, developed on the ERJ145 platform and operated by the IAF.
