IndiGo Doubles Airbus A350 Order to 60 Jets

India Our Bureau - : Jun 2, 2025 - : 5:42 pm

IndiGo, India’s largest airline by market share, has confirmed an order for 30 additional Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, doubling its initial commitment to a total of 60 jets.

The low-cost carrier also retains purchase rights for 40 more, underscoring its ambition to evolve into a global airline by 2030.

Speaking at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting on Sunday, IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said, “We have signed the MoU with Airbus for confirming the option for 30 A350s. Their delivery starts in 2027.”

The firm order follows the initial commitment made in May 2023 for 30 A350s, as IndiGo pivots towards long-haul international operations. The new batch of 30 aircraft will be delivered in the latter part of the next decade, further bolstering IndiGo’s global ambitions.

The A350s, powered by Rolls Royce’s Trent XWB engines, will enable IndiGo to launch non-stop services from Indian metros to Europe, North America, and beyond. The airline has already tested the long-haul waters by wet-leasing Boeing 777s from Turkish Airlines, a partnership that concludes within three months. It will soon induct Boeing 787s on wet lease from Norse Atlantic Airways to continue offering long-haul services to destinations such as Amsterdam and Manchester.

“This historic moment marks a new chapter for IndiGo and will further shape the future of the airline and Indian aviation,” Elbers said. “Our wide-body expansion, alongside strategic partnerships with Delta Air Lines, Air France-KLM and Virgin Atlantic, is designed to unlock seamless intercontinental connectivity.”

Currently operating a fleet of over 350 aircraft, IndiGo placed the world’s largest-ever single aircraft order in June 2023—500 Airbus narrow-body jets. This brings the carrier’s total outstanding order book to nearly 1,000 aircraft from the A320neo family, including the A321XLR.

The latest order will deepen IndiGo’s long-term relationship with Airbus and marks the beginning of its collaboration with Rolls Royce. The exact configuration of the A350s will be finalized later, but their addition is seen as critical to India’s broader goal of becoming a global aviation hub.

In 2023, IndiGo flew 100 million passengers and continues to be one of the fastest-growing airlines globally. As India eyes a leap from being the world’s 5th largest economy to the 3rd by 2030, IndiGo aims to play a pivotal role in supporting the government’s vision of aviation leadership through infrastructure development and global connectivity.
