Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) on July 2 delivered INS Udaygiri, the second Project 17A stealth frigate, to the Indian Navy, marking a key milestone in India’s naval modernisation and self-reliance efforts.
Named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh, INS Udaygiri is a next-generation warship with advanced stealth, sensors, and firepower—built entirely in India with over 75% indigenous content. The ship was handed over following the signing of the acceptance document by MDL CMD Capt. Jagmohan and Rear Admiral Ravnish Seth, CSO (Tech), Eastern Naval Command.
Part of a seven-ship program under Project 17A, Udaygiri follows its lead ship, INS Nilgiri, in showcasing India’s maturing shipbuilding capability. These frigates, with modular construction, cutting-edge combat systems, and high survivability, are a technological leap from their predecessors.
The delivery also reinforces MDL’s growing stature as a hub for complex warship construction, alongside its work on destroyers and submarines. As detailed in our earlier report, MDL’s execution of the Project 17A frigates reflects not just naval strength but also the progress of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative in defence.
As maritime threats grow in the Indo-Pacific, INS Udaygiri is more than a new platform—it is a symbol of India’s readiness to secure its seas with homegrown strength.
