Three Naval Platforms Commissioned into Indian Navy Service

India Atul Chandra - : Jan 15, 2025 - : 8:43 pm

The Indian Navy has commissioned three frontline naval combatants – INS Surat, INS Nilgiri and INS Vaghsheer – into service at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the new naval platforms to the nation. “It is for the first time that the tri-commissioning of a destroyer, frigate and submarine was being done”, highlighted the Prime Minister. He also emphasised that it was also a matter of pride that all the three frontline platforms were made in India. Prime Minister Modi remarked that currently, 60 large ships are under construction in the country, valued at approximately INR 1.5 trillion.

INS Surat is the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project and has an indigenous content of 75%. INS Nilgiri is the first ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, has been designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and incorporates advanced features for enhanced survivability, seakeeping, and stealth, reflecting the next generation of indigenous frigates.

INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project and has been constructed in collaboration with the Naval Group of France.
The navy has inducted 33 ships and seven submarines over the past decade, with 39 out of 40 naval vessels being built in Indian shipyards. This includes the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier and nuclear submarines like INS Arihant and INS Arighaat.
