RMAF Gets 1st Malaysian Overhauled SU-30 MKM

: Mar 25, 2019 - : 1:01 pm

Malaysian fighter aircraft maintenance firm Aerospace Technology Systems Corp. Sdn Bhd (ATSC) has successfully completed the ‘Preventive and Restoration Works (PRW)’ for 10 years calendar inspection of a Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Sukhoi SU-30 MKM fighter jet, marking a major indigenous success for the Malaysian aerospace industry.

The inaugral day of LIMA 2019 has seen the handover of the first overhauled SU-30 MKM Serial No. M52-11 to the RMAF.

The maintenance work on the aircraft was completed two weeks ago and will be a major boost to the RMAF’s quest to keep a greater proportion of its fighter assets operationally serviceable.

ATSC is now looking to perform similar maintenance work on three more SU-30 MKMs and work on two other aircraft is also nearing completion.

“It is now proposed to undertake a 2nd phase to replace obsolescent components and line replaceable units (LRU) and a more comprehensive 3rd phase to upgrade the capabilities of the SU-30 MKM and we have shared our plans with the RMAF and Government,” Dato’ Edron Hayata Ahmad, MD ATSC tells Daily News.

At present the RMAF has 10 out of its 18 SU-30 MKMs operational. A team of 30 ATSC professionals of Malaysian origin were involved in the maintenance work, which basically focussed on the structural aspects of the SU-30 MKM.

ATSC successfully completed compliance audits by Aircraft & Aeronautical Maintenance Regulation (AAMR) Team & Aircraft Aeronautical Engineering Regulation (AAER) and gained certification awards for maintenance work on the Su-30MKM in the following categories; 10 years Servicing and Design, Development, Review and Approval of Ground Support Equipment and AMO for the aircraft Intermediate Level Maintenance (ILM) and Depot Level Maintenance (DLM) on aircraft Su-30MKM Weapon Systems, Service Life Extension (SLE) and 10 Years Preventive Restoration Works (PRW), repair and overhaul.

The overhaul and maintenance work have been performed with assistance from Rosoboronexport, which has quantified and qualified the analysis and documentation generated for the maintenance work by ATSC.

ATSC is a subsidiary of National Aerospace & Defence Industry Sdn Bhd (NADI) which holds 70 per cent of the shares whilst its Russian partners, RAC MiG and ROSOBORONEXPORT, each holds 25 per cent and 5 per cent respectively. Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOF Inc.) holds one (1) golden share.
