Royal Thai Marines to Get Elbit Howitzers

: Apr 15, 2018 - : 6:01 pm

The Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC) will get six more 155 mm autonomous truck mounted howitzer system (ATMOS) from Israel’s Elbit Systems.

According to a recently signed contract, valued at about US$26 million, major parts of the system will be assembled in Thailand by the Weapon Production Centre’s Defence Industry and Energy Centre (WPC DIEC). Technology transferred from Elbit Systems will also allow other minor parts to be built by the WPC DIEC. The contract also has an option for additional units to be procured and built locally if required. The systems will be delivered within 28 months.

The contract fulfils a long-standing RTMC requirement to augment its existing firepower. As per reports, the Royal Thai Army (RTA) has already acquired 18 units of the ATMOS artillery system and has a requirement for 36 additional units. Elbit Systems line of guns includes the renowned ATMOS, a 155mm/52 caliber truck-mounted howitzer, and the ATHOS, a long-range 155mm/52 caliber autonomous towed howitzer. According to Elbit Systems both offer the advantages of superior fire power, enhanced mobility and rapid response time.

“Customers with existing infrastructure can benefit from our artillery platform upgrade capability to enhance the performance and capabilities of existing artillery systems to meet modern battlefield requirements. The upgrades are suitable for multiple firing platforms, including towed, tracked, truck-mounted and self-propelled guns,” says Elbit Systems.
