Aero India Begins Under Pall of Gloom

: Feb 20, 2019 - : 12:50 am

The 12th edition of Aero India is underway under a heavy air, following the loss of two Indian Air Force (IAF) Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team aircraft during rehearsals, the previous morning.

The aircraft were rehearsing the flying displays to be conducted by the nine aircraft aerobatic display team, when two aircraft collided mid-air. Although two pilots ejected safely, one succumbed to injuries. The unfortunate air accident dampened the mood of the show.

Over the years Aero India had carved a unique space to itself as it was sufficiently kept apart from other important air shows worldwide, providing foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the much needed time to participate in the event.

The ongoing show that kickstarted in Bengaluru, India, features participation from both national and international firms eyeing India’s large defence market.

The air show itself continues to remain a unique opportunity to view the eclectic collection of aircraft operated by India’s military and paramilitary forces.

Amongst the aircraft on flying display are Dassault Rafale, Falcon 8X and Falcon 2000S, Airbus A330-900, Airbus Helicopters H135 and H145 , Airbus C295 and Antonov AN-132D and Beriev BE-200.

Aero India is a biennial event that first took place in 1996. The 2017 edition of the show saw 60,000 business visitors and 1,00,000 general visitors.
