Air India Cancels Vaccination Drive Due to Vaccine Shortage

: May 11, 2021 - : 1:25 pm

The prevailing acute shortage of COVID-19 vaccines in India has forced Air India to cancel its employee vaccine drive this week.

The vaccination camp was planned for Tuesday and Thursday at the Air India GSD facility at Delhi Airport but has been put off indefinitely. The carrier is now in danger of missing its target of ensuring that its entire staff are vaccinated by the end of May.

Business Standard reported that Air India had informed its  employees late on Monday that the drive would not be held as scheduled. The reason provided was that “government authorities have expressed inability to hold these camps due to non-availability of vaccines.” A new date for vaccination will be set after vaccines are available.

Last week, a  pilots’ union threatened to stop flying if the airline did not provide vaccination camps to all staff.   The union The union stressed the crucial role airline crew members  played during the pandemic and the risk they face flying during the second wave.
