India’s national carrier Air India (AI) has announced that it will launch a twice weekly non-stop service between Bengaluru – San Francisco.

AI’s twice weekly non-stop service is to start from January 11, 2021.

AI will operate a 238-seater Boeing 777-200LR (Longer Range) on the new route.

AI’s new international route would be the first non-stop flight between Bengaluru and the United States.

The new non-stop service will set two records on commencement of operations – it would be AI’s longest route at 14,000+ km (8,698 miles) and longest flight to and from India (over 16 hours).

The first non-stop flight between Bengaluru and San Francisco will allow passengers, faster and easier access to cities on the West Coast of the United States.

AI operates a fleet of three Boeing B777-200 LRs, which are owned by the airline. The 777-200LR fleet allowed the airline to provide ultra-long-range, nonstop flights between any airport in India and the United States.

The delivery of AI’s first 777-200LR  Worldliner airplane took place in July 2007.

Air India ordered 68 Boeing jetliners in December 2005, then, the largest commercial airplane order in India’s civil aviation history.

The deal consisted of 23 777s, including eight 777-200LR Worldliners and 15 777-300ERs, and 27 787-8 Dreamliners.

Additionally, Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India, ordered 18 Next-Generation 737-800s, the same year.

The seating configuration chosen by Air India for its  B777-200 LRs comprises of eight seats in First Class, 35 seats in Business Class and 195 seats in Economy Class.

As per the airline, while operating on routes to the USA from India, the aircraft can carry 31.4 tonnes of passengers and baggage in addition to 14.4 tonnes of cargo.

The airline took delivery of its 125th airplane from Boeing in 2015, which was also its 27th 787-8 Dreamliner.
