The Asia-Pacific long-haul landscape is witnessing a significant structural shift as AirAsia X (AAX) confirms its return to the United Kingdom, utilising the Kingdom of Bahrain as a primary global gateway. In an announcement made in Manama on 11 February 2026, the carrier unveiled a daily service connecting Kuala Lumpur International (KUL) to London Gatwick (LGW) via Bahrain International (BAH), scheduled to commence on 26 June 2026. This move effectively establishes Bahrain as the airline’s first strategic hub outside of Asia, providing a technical and commercial bridge between Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.
The new service is more than a mere route resumption; it represents a fundamental change in AAX’s operational philosophy. By leveraging fifth-freedom traffic rights on the Bahrain-London sector, the airline can transport passengers solely between the Gulf state and the UK, directly challenging established legacy carriers on the route. This "Bahrain Pivot" addresses the range limitations of the current Airbus A330-300 fleet, which cannot reliably operate non-stop to London, while simultaneously tapping into the growing transit demand within the Middle East.
Reporting from Reuters, the AirAsia Newsroom, and mainstream outlets such as The Star and Business Today indicates that the expansion coincides with a broader consolidation of Capital A’s aviation assets. Analysts observe that the Bahrain hub will also serve as a node for Teleport, the group's logistics arm, which recently marked its inaugural flight to the Kingdom. Furthermore, the carrier is reportedly evaluating a massive fleet overhaul, moving away from its remaining A330-900neo orders in favour of approximately 100 regional jets—potentially the Airbus A220 or Embraer E2 families—to bolster its multi-hub "virtual" network.
The industrial implications for the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions are substantial. Capital A’s engineering division, Asia Digital Engineering (ADE), has expressed intentions to develop a 14-bay maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in Bahrain. This infrastructure investment supports Tony Fernandes’ ambitious vision to eventually base 100 aircraft in the Gulf state over the next decade. The initiative is expected to generate significant economic value, with projections suggesting the creation of up to 100,000 jobs and an investment influx of nearly US$10 billion (approximately RM43.5 billion) into the Bahraini economy over the long term.
"Bahrain as our strategic aviation hub allows us to connect Asia with the Middle East and Europe more effectively while creating a scalable platform for future growth," stated Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and Advisor to AAX. He further described the move as a "defining step" in the airline's evolution into a globally connected entity. Supporting this sentiment, H.E. Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Finance and National Economy, noted that the agreement reflects the Kingdom's strength as a centre for global connectivity and an essential economic partner.
