The Asia Pacific aviation landscape has reached a definitive turning point as AirAsia X (AAX) initiates a secondary phase of financial engineering following its massive structural overhaul. On 22 January 2026, the medium-haul carrier announced it is targeting between US$500 million and US$600 million in fresh debt restructuring and refinancing. This move follows the successful completion of its acquisition of the short-haul aviation businesses from parent company Capital A, a transaction that has effectively consolidated seven regional airlines under a single unified brand.
The restructuring efforts are designed to collapse multiple existing debt instruments into one or two streamlined loan facilities, according to Deputy Group CEO Farouk Kamal. By stretching out tenures and reducing interest costs, the carrier aims to fortify its balance sheet as it transitions into the world’s first low-cost network carrier. This latest financial manoeuvre marks the end of a six-year period of distress that began with the pandemic in 2020. The original sources for these developments, including Reuters, Business Today, and official Bursa Malaysia filings, confirm that the aviation business disposal by Capital A to AirAsia X was finalised on 16 January 2026, with new shares listed on 19 January 2026.
To understand the magnitude of the current US$600 million initiative, one must look back to the radical "scheme of arrangement" completed in March 2022. During the height of the global health crisis, AirAsia X was forced to negotiate a staggering 99.5 per cent haircut with its creditors, reducing approximately RM33.65 billion (US$8.3 billion) in liabilities to a settlement of just 0.5 per cent. This historic restructuring was a prerequisite for the airline’s survival and its subsequent exit from the Practice Note 17 (PN17) financial distress status in November 2023. The 2026 consolidation now absorbs RM3.8 billion (US$937.2 million) of debt previously held by Capital A, centralising the group's financial obligations within the enlarged AirAsia Group.
With the financial deck cleared, the airline is pivoting toward aggressive fleet and route expansion. AirAsia X expects the delivery of four Airbus A321LR aircraft within the 2026 calendar year, supporting a strategy to connect the Asia Pacific region with new hubs in the Middle East and Africa. Plans are already in motion to develop a secondary hub in Bahrain to link Central Asia and Europe. This expansion is backed by a robust order book, which includes 50 A321XLR jets, a move that signals the carrier's intent to dominate the medium-to-long-haul low-cost segment across the Eastern Hemisphere.
Financial indicators suggest the restructuring is yielding tangible results. In its third-quarter 2025 results released on 28 November 2025, AirAsia X reported a net profit of RM27.8 million (US$6.8 million), maintaining a profitable streak since late 2022. The airline’s Chief Financial Officer, Low Kar Chuan, indicated that the group targets near-term revenue approaching US$6 billion with an EBITDA margin of 20 per cent. By consolidating all AirAsia-branded operations, the group expects to achieve higher aircraft utilisation—currently at 16 hours per day—and a steady passenger load factor of over 80 per cent, cementing its position as a dominant force in the regional aerospace sector.
