Airbus and Singapore DSTA Complete HTeaming Flight Trials

Airbus and Singapore Conclude Landmark HTeaming Flight Campaign

Airbus and Singapore’s Defence Science and Technology Agency (DSTA) have officially announced the successful conclusion of a pioneering HTeaming flight campaign at a Singaporean airbase. The demonstration, which concluded in January 2026, marked the first operational integration between an Airbus Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system (UAS) and a Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) H225M medium-lift helicopter. This milestone represents a significant leap for Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) capabilities within the Asia-Pacific region, proving that crewed rotorcraft can securely command and process real-time data from autonomous platforms to extend their operational reach.

The HTeaming trials were the culmination of a strategic agreement signed in June 2025, aimed at exploring how the synergy between crewed and uncrewed assets could enhance situational awareness in complex environments. During the January flight tests, the teams utilised simulated search and rescue scenarios to validate the system's efficacy. The results demonstrated that the H225M crew could successfully access live data feeds from the Flexrotor while maintaining direct command of the UAS, effectively extending the helicopter's visual range and increasing overall mission safety by keeping the crew further from high-risk zones.

According to official statements from Airbus, the HTeaming solution is a modular, UAS-agnostic system designed for integration across the entire Airbus helicopter range. For these specific trials, Airbus managed the design of the data-link architectures and the integration of the system into the RSAF’s H225M. The Flexrotor, a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) drone with a launch weight of 25 kg (55 lbs), provided more than 12 hours of endurance, proving to be a vital force multiplier for the 11-tonne H225M platform.

A force multiplier for regional security

The success of the HTeaming trials holds particular weight in the Asia-Pacific, where the H225M is already a staple of regional air arms, including those of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand. As regional security requirements become more sophisticated, the ability to retrofit existing fleets with modular MUM-T capabilities offers a cost-effective path to modernising tactical operations. The integration of the Flexrotor, which requires a minimal footprint of only 3.7 by 3.7 metres for launch and recovery, makes the system ideal for the expeditionary and maritime-heavy environments common across Southeast Asia.

Industry perspectives on tactical evolution

The leadership behind the project has hailed the results as a transformative step for the industry. Ang Jer Meng, Director of Air Systems at DSTA, noted that the complexity of modern operations requires solutions that adapt in real time. He stated that the successful flight demonstration underscores a commitment to innovation and strong industrial partnerships to deliver cutting-edge solutions, marking a positive step in enhancing mission effectiveness while ensuring human decision-making remains central to the operation.

Olivier Michalon, Executive Vice President of Global Business at Airbus Helicopters, described the successful teaming as a game-changer for modern tactical operations. He explained that the campaign illustrates the ability to exploit dual-use technologies to support secure operations, enabling air commanders with unprecedented situational awareness in high-risk environments. This follows earlier comments from Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even, who had previously remarked that the collaboration between helicopters and UAS is a revolution in mission effectiveness, combining the skills of pilots with the advanced endurance of uncrewed systems.

Future outlook for HTeaming

With the completion of these trials, Airbus is positioned to market HTeaming as a scalable, future-proof ecosystem. The system’s modularity—utilising a tablet-based Human-Machine Interface (HMI) and specialised modems—allows for rapid deployment across different mission profiles. As Singapore continues to invest in its defence capabilities, having increased its 2025 budget by 12.4 per cent to approximately SGD 23.5 billion (US$17.5 billion), the successful validation of HTeaming serves as a blueprint for future Franco-Singaporean aerospace collaboration and sets a new benchmark for MUM-T operations globally.
