The European aerospace giant Airbus is reportedly on the verge of securing a significant order from AirAsia for approximately 100 A220 narrowbody aircraft. This potential agreement represents a pivotal shift for the Kuala Lumpur-based low-cost carrier (LCC) as it seeks to diversify its fleet and penetrate thinner regional routes across the Asia-Pacific. If finalised, the deal is expected to include firm orders for 100 jets with options for an additional 50 units, providing the airline with the flexibility required to navigate the volatile post-pandemic aviation landscape.
The acquisition of the A220—originally developed by Bombardier as the CSeries—would mark AirAsia’s first foray into the small narrowbody segment. While the airline has historically relied on the larger A320 family, the A220 offers superior economics for secondary city pairs and underserved regional hubs. Industry analysts suggest that the deal could be valued at several billion dollars based on current list prices, though large-scale orders typically involve substantial confidential discounts. For context, the list price of an A220-300 is approximately US$91.5 million (approximately £72.2 million), placing the potential total value for 100 units near US$9.15 billion (approximately £7.22 billion) before negotiations.
According to reports from Reuters and various industry sources on 23 January 2026, the discussions have intensified following the recent corporate restructuring of the AirAsia group. The news follows a period of renewed efforts by Airbus to clinch the deal, which saw competition from the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and its E2 family of regional jets. The potential order aligns with comments made by AirAsia co-founder Tony Fernandes in mid-2025 regarding the need for smaller, more efficient aircraft to support the group's "hub-and-spoke" expansion strategy within Southeast Asia and beyond.
The timing of this deal is closely linked to the recent financial and structural overhaul of the airline’s parent entity. On 19 January 2026, AirAsia X Berhad successfully completed the acquisition of AirAsia’s core aviation units from Capital A Berhad. This consolidation under a single "AirAsia Group" platform is designed to streamline operations and improve fleet utilisation. By introducing the A220, the unified group can deploy smaller-capacity aircraft on routes where the 180-seat A320 is too large to operate profitably, effectively capturing market share in emerging secondary markets in Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
A key component of the negotiations involves the development of a potential high-density, 160-seat version of the A220-300. Such a configuration would allow AirAsia to maximise seat-mile costs while maintaining the range and efficiency benefits of the Pratt & Whitney GTF-powered aircraft. This move is essential for the carrier to maintain its low-cost leadership in a region where air travel demand is projected to grow by 4.4% annually over the next two decades. Airbus’s own Global Market Forecast indicates that the Asia-Pacific will require over 19,500 new aircraft by 2045, with single-aisle jets making up the vast majority of that requirement.
While the deal signals a robust recovery for the Malaysian carrier, it comes at a time of continued pressure on the global aerospace supply chain. Airbus has been working to ramp up A220 production at its facilities in Mirabel, Canada, and Mobile, Alabama, to meet a growing backlog. Furthermore, the industry continues to monitor the availability of engines and maintenance slots, with MRO demand expected to peak in 2026. For AirAsia, securing a delivery timeline that aligns with its 2028-2032 growth targets will be as critical as the purchase price itself, ensuring the airline can retire older airframes and maintain one of the youngest, most fuel-efficient fleets in the region.
