Airbus is staging a unique decarbonisation showcase at the ongoing airshow by combining four major emissions-reduction tools—new-generation aircraft, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Book & Claim (B&C), and carbon dioxide removals (CDR)—on a single flight.
The European airframer is making the case that decarbonisation will not be achieved through one silver-bullet solution, but through a combination of complementary levers working in parallel.
Flying from Toulouse to Dubai for the Airshow, an Airbus A350-1000 will serve as a real-world testbed for the combined technologies. As one of the world’s newest and most efficient long-range aircraft, the A350-1000 burns around 25% less fuel than the generation it replaces, illustrating the critical role fleet renewal will play in meeting global climate targets.
Today, only about 30% of the world’s commercial fleet falls into the “latest generation” category, underscoring the opportunity for airlines to unlock significant emissions reductions simply by modernising.
Airbus will fuel the A350 with a 35% blend of physical SAF, with the remainder supplied by conventional aviation fuel. While Toulouse benefits from well-developed SAF infrastructure, Airbus acknowledges that most airports around the world cannot yet offer SAF in meaningful quantities.
Industry modelling reinforces this point. ATAG’s Waypoint 2050 analysis shows that SAF alone could deliver up to 53–71% of emissions reductions by 2050—making it the single most important lever in the sector’s net-zero strategy.
To address global supply and logistics constraints, Airbus is also spotlighting the Book & Claim accounting mechanism, which allows operators to purchase SAF—even if it cannot be physically delivered at the airport they operate from.
In the case of this demonstration flight, Airbus has purchased SAF certificates through the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). The SAF itself is then delivered and consumed elsewhere, while Airbus receives credit for the emissions reductions associated with its production and use. With SAF costing between 2–7 times more than conventional fuel, Book & Claim could help scale demand more efficiently by connecting buyers and producers regardless of geography.
Even with the combination of new aircraft and SAF, there will remain a residual emissions gap that the industry must close to reach net zero by 2050. Airbus’ showcase also incorporates carbon dioxide removals, highlighting the growing role engineered and nature-based removals will play in complementing SAF and other low-carbon technologies.
By integrating all four decarbonisation levers into a single operational flight, Airbus aims to illustrate the structured, multi-layered approach required to decarbonise aviation. None of these technologies alone can deliver net zero—but together, they represent a realistic, scalable pathway for the sector.
