Global aerospace giant Airbus has underscored its long-term commitment to Malaysia, positioning the nation as a central pillar of its industrial and defence strategy within the Asia-Pacific region. Speaking at the launch of the New Defence Industry Policy on 21 January 2026, Airbus executives highlighted the deepening of local ecosystems aimed at accelerating technology transfer and enhancing Malaysia's strategic self-reliance. This reaffirmation follows decades of integration where Malaysia has evolved from a customer into a vital industrial partner, now serving as Airbus’s largest supplier base in Southeast Asia.
The collaboration spans the full spectrum of the group’s portfolio, including commercial aviation, rotorcraft, and space systems. Zakir Hamid, Head of Asia-Pacific for Airbus Defence and Space, emphasised that the partnership is unique due to its breadth, covering fleet modernisation, local industrial participation, and advanced skills development. Central to this relationship is the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP), which has successfully integrated Malaysian-made components into nearly every Airbus aircraft currently in production globally.
According to reports from the Bernama News Agency and other defence watchers on 21 January 2026, Airbus currently procures approximately MYR 1.5 billion (US$350 million) worth of commodities and services from Malaysia annually. This industrial footprint supports an estimated 5,000 direct and indirect jobs across the country. By leveraging local expertise from tier-1 suppliers such as CTRM and SME Aerospace, Airbus has effectively turned Malaysia into a manufacturing hub for critical components used in the A320 family, the A350, and the A400M military airlifter.
A significant milestone celebrated during the recent engagement was the 10th anniversary of A400M operations by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) in 2025. Malaysia holds the distinction of being the first export customer for the A400M, and with over 14,000 flight hours recorded, the RMAF is currently the most active operator of the platform worldwide. This operational success is backed by a robust maintenance and support infrastructure that ensures high fleet availability for both strategic transport and humanitarian missions across the region.
Beyond manufacturing, Airbus is intensifying its focus on the Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC). As a founding partner alongside the Malaysian government, Airbus uses AMIC to spearhead research in sustainable aviation fuels and digital manufacturing. This initiative aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030, which seeks to transform the aerospace sector into a high-value, tech-driven industry. Furthermore, the 2025 opening of a new regional hub in Putrajaya, which houses 170 staff, underscores the shift toward providing high-level customer services and digital flight-hour support from within the country.
In the space and security sectors, Airbus maintains a 100% market share in Malaysia’s coastal surveillance through its STYRIS solution, which has secured the Straits of Malacca for over 15 years. The company’s contribution to Malaysia's space sovereignty is equally significant, having delivered the MEASAT-3b and MEASAT-3d satellites. Looking ahead to 2026, the company plans to operationalise its third helicopter full-flight simulator in Subang, further cementing Malaysia’s status as a regional centre of excellence for pilot training and maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services.
