Airbus is set to deepen its maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) cooperation with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI), in a move that underscores Thailand’s growing role as an aerospace sustainment hub in Southeast Asia. The enhanced collaboration follows ongoing joint support for the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) aircraft fleet, particularly its C295 and Airbus Helicopters platforms.
As airlines and defence operators across the Asia-Pacific region expand their fleets, demand for reliable localised MRO solutions is increasing sharply. Thailand’s position between major aviation markets — including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam — makes it an increasingly strategic location for regional support activities.
The partnership expansion was first revealed by local media on 7 November 2025, which reported that Airbus executives reaffirmed long-term intentions to enhance TAI’s industrial capabilities. Both sides are expected to explore deeper cooperation in component services, skills training, and digital maintenance support.
TAI — a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Defence — has been steadily expanding its capabilities since its formation in 2003. The company presently maintains RTAF transport aircraft, including the Airbus C295, worth approximately €28 million each (around USD 30 million), alongside EC725/H225M helicopters essential to Thailand’s search-and-rescue and tactical airlift missions.
The latest collaboration may include expanding service capacity at U-Tapao International Airport and Don Mueang, where Thailand has ambitions to develop an aviation and defence industrial corridor under its Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) policy. The EEC development programme has attracted major international aerospace players, including Airbus, which previously partnered with Thai Airways to pursue a commercial MRO centre at U-Tapao.
The Asia-Pacific region is forecast to account for 40% of global commercial aircraft demand by 2043, driven by strong aviation growth in Southeast Asia and India. Defence aviation upgrades — including troop transport, maritime security and helicopter-based operations — are further accelerating the need for sovereign sustainment.
For Airbus, expanding industrial partnerships in markets like Thailand supports:
These benefits align with Thailand’s longer-term ambition to develop local aerospace manufacturing capabilities, potentially opening future opportunities for component industrialisation and deeper defence-industrial collaboration.
With the RTAF continuing procurement planning for future transport aircraft, air mobility enhancements, and helicopter modernisation, a stronger local MRO foundation ensures higher fleet availability during operations such as disaster relief, border security, and regional peacekeeping.
Industry observers say the Airbus–TAI enhancement is timely, positioning Thailand to compete in the fast-growing Asian sustainment market dominated today by Singapore and increasingly Malaysia.
