Airbus Helicopters has introduced the H140, a light twin-engine helicopter, at the VERTICON event in Dallas, Texas. The 3-tonne class rotorcraft is intended to complement the company’s existing light twin offerings, targeting emergency medical services, passenger transport, and private and business aviation markets. Entry into service is planned for 2028, beginning with the emergency medical services segment.
Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, stated that the introduction of the H140 reflects the company’s commitment to addressing evolving customer requirements. “We worked hand in hand with our H135 customers to bring their additional requirements together in the H140’s efficient design,” he said. “It enables customers to benefit from a bigger mission-enhancing cabin space that was sized to an optimised engine performance for the best-in-class payload and range. We are proud to be able to offer our customers the most competitive choices.”
A full-scale model of the H140 in an emergency medical services configuration was displayed at VERTICON. The helicopter features a new T-shaped tail boom with an optimised Fenestron to reduce noise levels, a five-blade bearingless main rotor, and upgraded engines. The cabin layout has been designed for accessibility, featuring large windows, sliding doors, and clamshell rear doors to accommodate different stretcher systems, including intensive care units and transport incubators. It can carry up to six passengers.
Powered by the Safran Arrius 2E 700 shp engine, the H140 offers what Airbus describes as the best payload-to-range performance in its class. The dual-channel full-authority digital engine control (FADEC) system manages both engines, providing high levels of performance in normal operations and additional power reserves in the event of one engine failing.
The helicopter shares its five-bladed rotor system with the H145, introduced in 2019. This bearingless rotor design is intended to simplify maintenance, improve reliability, and enhance comfort for passengers and crew. Operators will benefit from an optimised maintenance plan that aligns airframe and engine servicing schedules, extending intervals between inspections and reducing operating costs. Airbus Helicopters plans to produce four dedicated prototypes, with the first aircraft already undergoing flight testing in Donauwörth.
The H140 will also be equipped with Helionix, Airbus Helicopters’ avionic system, which is also used on the H135, H145, H160, and H175. This system, combined with a four-axis autopilot, is designed to enhance situational awareness, reduce pilot workload, and improve overall safety.
