The Singapore airshow is living up to its top billing as the world’s third largest airshow with over 1,000 participating companies and several important aircraft making their regional or show debuts this year. Singapore’s flourishing aviation and aerospace industry and the strongly business focussed nature of the airshow, has also meant that over 75 percent of the participating companies return every year. 65 of the top 100 global aerospace companies attended the last two editions of the show. No doubt, participating companies are attracted by the opportunity to interact with high-ranking officials from not only Singapore but the surrounding region, in addition an opportunity to meet an estimated 50,000 trade visitors visiting the show from more than 150 countries and regions.
It has only taken 10 years for the biennial Singapore Airshow, since its inaugural edition in 2008 to grow to the scale of the largest airshow in the region and its 5th edition also marks the 50 year celebrations of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF), which has rapidly evolved into a potent and highly professional air arm. The integrated aerial display comprising an F-15SG and two F-16C fighter aircraft is the first time both aircraft types are performing together at the air show. 15 manoeuvres will be flown by three fighter aircraft out of which six will be performed for the first time in public. “We have trained intensively the last three months to put together this show, and it will be the first time that we are using an F-15SG and two F-16s in the same formation,” says Major Chang Haw Ning, the aerial display team lead.
Airshow debuts are an important indicator of an airshows importance and in this aspect the Singapore Airshow ranks right up there with the best! While the number of aircraft on static display is the same as the previous edition of the show, for Singapore’s tech-savvy public, the maiden show appearance of United States Marine Corp F-35B Joint Strike Fighter and the RQ-4B Global Hawk unmanned aircraft system, provide an early opportunity to view types that could join the RSAF in the future. Also making its airshow debut is a Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning aircraft. Commercial representation is strong too, Airbus’s A350-1000 which can seat a total of 336 is making its show debut, while Embraer’s E-190 E2 prototype and Gulfstream’s G500, G600 and Cessna’s Citation Longitude are making their regional debuts here. Honda has is also displaying its light business jet for the first time here.
