Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram has been appointed as the new Director General of the Israel Ministry of Defence (IMOD) in a ceremony held on Monday and presided over by Defence Minister Israel Katz. The event was attended by senior military and ministry officials, including IDF Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, former IMOD Director Generals, representatives from defence industries, and other key figures.
Defence Minister Katz highlighted Baram's experience as a key factor in his appointment, particularly his past role as IDF Deputy Chief of General Staff, where he was responsible for force development and strategic relations with international partners, including the United States. “We must be capable of defending ourselves through our own strength,” Katz stated, adding that Baram will oversee matters related to force build-up, procurement, and armaments. He also reaffirmed the ministry’s continued commitment to supporting wounded veterans and bereaved families.
In his remarks, Baram outlined his priorities for the role, stating, “Together we will develop a ministerial strategy ensuring our defence establishment, including the IDF, maintains its capability to defeat all threats 'from knife to nuclear'—including those we cannot yet anticipate.” He emphasised the importance of balancing immediate operational readiness with long-term development while fostering cooperation with international partners, government ministries, and the IDF. Baram also highlighted the need to prioritise technology, personnel, combat capabilities, armament, and security diplomacy. He expressed gratitude to Minister Katz for his trust and described his new role as a mission undertaken with “humility, dedication, and confidence.”
Baram also acknowledged Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir for his tenure as Director General during the ongoing conflict and thanked Itamar Graff, the IMOD Deputy Director General and Head of the Planning Department, for serving as Acting Director General in recent weeks.
