Andøya Space of Norway and Rheinmetall Nordic AS have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to jointly strengthen Europe's ability to launch and operate satellites amid rising security demands.
The partnership aims to plug gaps in Europe's satellite and launch infrastructure by developing commercial and military space services from Andøya in northern Norway. The companies said the alliance will enable both regular launch services and rapid-response missions — known as Tactical Responsive Launch (TacRL) — to quickly deploy or replace satellites.
Such capabilities are seen as crucial for Germany, Norway, NATO allies, and partner countries seeking secure, resilient space assets in an increasingly tense geopolitical climate.
"This Letter of Intent is a significant milestone for Andøya Space. By bundling expertise and infrastructure, we are aiming at reinforcing Europe's ability to respond swiftly and securely to emerging civil and military space demands," said Troels Sandreid, President of Andøya Spaceport.
Thomas Berge Nielsen, CEO of Rheinmetall Nordic AS, added: "The collaboration with Andøya Space will be a decisive factor in developing European space capabilities for both the civil and military sectors."
Andøya Space operates mainland Europe's only orbital spaceport, while Rheinmetall is a major defense group with growing interest in space. Their cooperation is expected to provide Europe with greater strategic autonomy, faster deployment of new space capabilities, and improved resilience in space operations.
