Another Asia-Pacific ‘pivot’ – UKTI

: Feb 12, 2014 - : 9:31 am

The USA’s strategic ‘pivot’ to the Asia-Pacific region has attracted a lot of attention. However, there is another ‘pivot’ occurring that has not attracted quite the same level of attention.

David Hatcher, a regional director of UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), noted about the UK: “After a number of years having a rather introspective attitude to the region, we have over the last year or so started to become very much more interested as a nation in this region. We are a trading nation, and our prosperity depends not only on open trade routes, but having good relations with important countries who are prospective partners in the region, and our interests also depend on security and stability.”

Hatcher said UKTI’s relationship with Singapore had really strengthened in the past year. The UK has maintained a commitment to the region through the Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA), but “friendly words are now being given more substance”.
An example of the UK’s greater presence is typified by the destroyer HMS Daring, described by many as the most modern warship afloat today. It has visited a handful of countries in the region, and it also raced to the Philippines in the aftermath of the supertyphoon that hit the Philippines late last year. The Eurofighter Typhoon is another product UKTI is helping promote. Incidentally, Hatcher pointed out that the UK in the future will be operating a mixed fleet of Typhoon and F-35 fighters, which has relevance to South Korea as it refloats its F-X Phase 3 competition with the Lockheed Martin F-35 seen as the favoured platform.

This year more than 20 UK companies are exhibiting at the Singapore Air Show.
