Australia’s long-term defence modernisation has taken another decisive step with the United States approving the potential sale of forty-eight (48) M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and associated equipment, worth an estimated USD 705 million (approximately AUD 1.07 billion). The sale, confirmed by the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), reflects the growing military interoperability between Canberra and Washington as both nations respond to shifting security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
The acquisition will see Australia join a growing list of HIMARS operators across the Asia-Pacific, including Singapore and Taiwan—highlighting the region’s accelerating investment in long-range precision fires. The M142 HIMARS, produced by Lockheed Martin, is a combat-proven, highly mobile launch system capable of firing precision-guided munitions at ranges exceeding 70 kilometres (43 miles), and extended-range variants that can reach over 300 kilometres (186 miles).
According to DSCA’s announcement, the Australian request includes a range of supporting systems such as M1084A2 HIMARS resupply vehicles, M1095 trailers, communication mounts, intercom systems, and Low Cost Reduced Range Practice Rocket (LCRRPR) pods. The package also includes engineering, logistics, and technical support from US Government and contractor personnel.
The deal is expected to significantly enhance Australia’s deterrence capabilities and operational reach, complementing other major defence acquisitions such as the LAND 8113 Long Range Fires programme, under which the Australian Army is set to deploy HIMARS by the late 2020s. This system will integrate seamlessly with the US and allied command structures, reinforcing collective defence arrangements under AUKUS and other bilateral frameworks.
The US State Department underscored that the sale “supports the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States,” calling Australia “one of the United States’ most important allies in the Western Pacific.” The move aligns with Washington’s strategic aim to bolster the self-defence capacity of partners across the Indo-Pacific amid intensifying geopolitical competition.
With Lockheed Martin, L3Harris Corporation, Leonardo DRS, and Oshkosh Corporation listed as key contractors, the sale will also benefit the US defence industrial base. Notably, the DSCA stated that there are no offset agreements currently proposed, and implementation will not require additional US personnel to be stationed in Australia.
For Australia, the HIMARS acquisition represents a vital component of its evolving Integrated Investment Program, which seeks to establish a more agile, long-range strike capability across land, sea, and air domains. The system’s rapid-deployability, precision, and proven battlefield record—demonstrated in Ukraine and other modern conflicts—are expected to significantly enhance the Australian Defence Force’s capacity to deter potential threats and project power within the region.
