Australia will acquire thirty K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery systems and fifteen supply vehicles from Hanwha, a South Korean defence company.

The contract to buy the weapons was signed by Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison and South Korean President Moon Jae-on Monday during the latter’s visit to Canberra.

“The contract that we have signed today, I think, speaks volumes about what we believe are the capabilities of the Korean defence industry,” said Morrison in a press conference. He also added that the deal would create at least 300 jobs in Australia where a Hanwha division is operating.

In response, Moon said that both leaders have also agreed to upgrade both nations’ formal ties to a “comprehensive strategic partnership”.

The deal will also put Hanwha in a better position to win another contract valued around US$21.5 billion for Australia’s planned infantry fighting vehicle program for its Army.

The South Korean President Moon Jae-in is in his four-day trip to Australia, his trip coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties between both nations.
