AUV Project Gathers Steam

: Dec 30, 2013 - : 7:57 am

India’s Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) project, capable of assisting in maritime security and deep-sea operations, is currently undergoing sea trials.
The AUV will be capable of carrying payloads of up to 500 kg to accomplish a plethora of operations such as surveillance, sensor deployment, and mine countermeasure, besides delivery of ammunition.
The AUV can be launched by a Launch & Recovery System that maintains the AUV in position for initialization of the sensors and lowering it to sea for the mission.
“Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) has developed a technology demonstrator AUV, which has a flatfish configuration and can carry a payload up to 500 kilogram,” Defense Minister A. K. Antony announced in parliament on Dec. 9. However, he said, “The project proposal for development of AUVs for various roles based on inputs from Navy, academia, industry and scientific laboratories is at a preliminary stage.”
But, defense Ministry officials indicated that the AUV weighs 1.7-ton and its flat fish hydrodynamic shape helps make it highly flexible and versatile.
The AUV can hover at zero-speed and its multi-sensor intelligence robotic architecture provides for underwater monitoring and communication.
The AUVs will soon undergo a fresh set of sea trials, they added.  Plans are also on the anvil to develop a variant of the AUV that can conduct more frontline activity like mine-laying.
The AUV project involves the Electronic Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Hyderabad, as the concurrent engineering partner.  The cost of the AUV is roughly $8.4 million and it will augment underwater surveillance capabilities of the Indian Navy.
With the development of the AUV, DRDO has enabled India to be at par with nations like the U.S. and Japan with such indigenous technology.
