BAE Systems has unveiled Brontanax, the United Kingdom's first autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA), marking a significant milestone in the country's effort to field uncrewed combat aircraft capable of operating alongside crewed fighters before the end of the decade.
Revealed at the Farnborough International Airshow, the prototype has been developed under the UK's Storm Fighter programme and is intended to provide electronic warfare and precision strike capabilities while operating as a force multiplier alongside aircraft such as the Royal Air Force's Eurofighter Typhoon.
The announcement comes weeks after the UK Government committed £300 million (approximately US$400 million) to the sovereign autonomous CCA programme as part of its Defence Investment Plan, underlining the growing importance of collaborative combat aircraft within Britain's future air combat strategy.
Designed and built by BAE Systems engineers at Warton, Lancashire, Brontanax is the first aircraft of its kind developed entirely in the UK. More than 500 BAE Systems employees have worked on the programme alongside over 75 large companies and small and medium-sized enterprises across the country's aerospace and defence supply chain. The aircraft has been developed through BAE Systems' FalconWorks advanced technology organisation and is currently being prepared for ground testing before flight trials begin in UK airspace next year.
Designed to Fly Alongside Combat Aircraft
Unlike conventional combat aircraft, Brontanax is intended to operate as part of a mixed force of crewed and uncrewed platforms.
Similar in size to a BAE Systems Hawk trainer, the aircraft is designed to be controlled by a Typhoon pilot or mission commander from stand-off range, allowing it to undertake high-risk tasks while supporting crewed aircraft during combat operations.
BAE Systems said the platform has been designed with an open architecture and modular systems, allowing new software, sensors and mission payloads to be integrated as operational requirements evolve.
The company said the aircraft is intended to provide between 70% and 80% of the capability of a conventional fighter aircraft at less than 25% of the acquisition cost, potentially placing the unit cost at around US$25 million. It also aims to deliver a lower radar signature than comparable collaborative combat aircraft currently under development.
Simon Barnes, Group Managing Director of BAE Systems' Air sector, said the aircraft had been developed to address the changing demands facing modern air forces.
"We recognise armed forces are being challenged to meet the demands of speed, adaptability and scale. Our Collaborative Combat Aircraft will provide the ability to extend the reach of crewed aircraft, generating greater combat mass at lower cost, while keeping pilots out of harm's way. This capability represents a significant company investment in the UK's future of air power and builds on our long-standing commitment to innovation."
Supporting the RAF's Future Combat Air Ambitions
The Royal Air Force views collaborative combat aircraft as an important element of its future force structure as it prepares for sixth-generation air operations.
Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, Chief of the Air Staff, said Brontanax demonstrated the pace at which autonomous capabilities were being developed within the UK's defence industry. "The RAF is determined to become Europe's first sixth-generation Air Force, driving innovation and accelerating the adoption of cutting-edge technology to stay ahead in an increasingly complex and contested battlespace."
He added that the aircraft formed part of the RAF's wider Storm Fighter programme, which is expected to produce a flying prototype next year.
UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting described Brontanax as evidence of Britain's ability to develop advanced combat aircraft domestically. "The unveiling of Brontanax, the UK's first uncrewed autonomous Collaborative Combat Aircraft, is a testament to the extraordinary talent and innovation across our sovereign defence industry."
He said the government's £300 million investment in Storm Fighter was intended to help deliver the UK's ambition of becoming Europe's first sixth-generation air force.
Joining a Growing International Field
The UK joins a growing number of countries investing in collaborative combat aircraft as militaries seek lower-cost autonomous platforms capable of operating alongside crewed fighters.
Australia's Boeing MQ-28 Ghost Bat, which is also on display at Farnborough, has already entered flight testing and is expected to enter operational service later this decade. The United States is also progressing its Collaborative Combat Aircraft programmes, while several European nations are incorporating autonomous "loyal wingman" concepts into future combat air initiatives.
BAE Systems said Brontanax builds on more than 25 years of company experience in autonomous and uncrewed systems and has so far been funded through internal research and development investment.
With ground testing due to begin shortly and first flight planned for next year, the aircraft is expected to play a central role in the UK's sovereign collaborative combat aircraft programme as the RAF works towards introducing the capability by 2030.
