The Turkish Ministry of National Defense has confirmed the successful completion of inspection and acceptance procedures for the Sub-Cloud Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) BAHA, which has now officially entered the inventory of the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF). Procured in various quantities by the Land Forces Command, BAHA was developed by HAVELSAN and marks a significant milestone in Turkey’s military modernization efforts.
Originally conceptualised in 2021, the Digital Troops initiative has now been strengthened with the induction of BAHA, following the earlier integration of BARKAN, the first unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) under the program. The addition of BAHA underscores the Turkish military's commitment to advanced technological integration and operational enhancement.
With an eye on future operational environments, HAVELSAN has expanded its deployment of unmanned systems both domestically and internationally. BAHA achieved notable export successes in Africa, Central Asia, and the MENA region during 2023 and 2024, and is now available for use by Turkish national security forces.
BAHA's versatility was also demonstrated in its deployment during a disaster and earthquake drill coordinated by the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), where it was used for rubble reconnaissance and surveillance missions.
At the Ministry of National Defense Weekly Press Briefing, Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk highlighted the expanding capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces, emphasizing the role of domestically developed defense systems in enhancing Turkey's national and international influence. He remarked:
"With our domestically developed defense industry products, which aim to strengthen our national and international power, the capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces continue to grow. The inspection and acceptance procedures for the Sub-Cloud Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (BAHA) procured by the Land Forces Command have now been completed, and the systems have officially joined our inventory."
BAHA has a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 28 kilograms, including payload, and features a 4-metre wingspan. It can carry up to 2 kilograms of mission-specific payloads and operates with a data link range of up to 50 kilometres. Powered by an electric motor, it cruises at 43 knots (approximately 80 km/h) and offers a flight endurance of up to two hours. The UAV is capable of operating at an altitude of 8,000 feet, with a ceiling altitude of 10,000 feet, and withstands wind speeds of up to 25 knots. Its operational temperature range spans from -10°C to +50°C.
BAHA’s design enables vertical take-off and landing (VTOL), allowing for runway-independent deployment. It is tailored for sub-cloud operational environments and can be transported, operated, and maintained by a two-person team. The platform supports reconnaissance, surveillance, and intelligence missions during both day and night and is effective even in jamming environments. It is equipped for target coordinate estimation and features telemetry link redundancy, along with autonomous return and landing functions in the event of a communication loss. BAHA is also compatible with a variety of mission-specific sensors and can operate jointly with other unmanned systems.
BAHA, engineered to meet the demands of modern military operations, continues to enhance the capabilities of the Turkish Armed Forces. Its induction into service reflects HAVELSAN’s ongoing commitment to technological innovation and excellence.
