The Turkish Ministry of Defence has announced that it had received requests from the Royal Bahraini Army to purchase military equipment, including the Kalkan 2 search and tracking radar, which is designed and developed by Turkish company Aselsan.
Kalkan 2 is a phased-array, electronically scanned search and 3D tracking radar system designed to carry out low- and medium-range air defence operations.
The Kalkan-2, which entered service in 2008, is the main radar of the Turkish HERiKKS early warning and control system for air defense operations used by the Turkish Armed Forces, as well as the "HISAR" (surface-to-air) missile system for medium-altitude air defense.
The Kalkan-2 is an electronic three-dimensional search radar array. It uses the "X" frequency band for tracking military and civilian critical air targets, as well as point and area early targets, both mobile and stationary.
The Kalkan-2 radar has a range of 120 km and can track several targets simultaneously and accurately. It can also designate and identify individual targets and the path of each one.
The Turkish Ministry of Defense stated that within the context of the the common historical and cultural ties between the two countries, political relations between Turkey and Bahrain are being pursued in line with the principles of common interest and dialogue. It should be noted that Turkey opened its embassy in Bahrain in 1990, while the embassy of the Kingdom of Bahrain has been operating in Ankara since 2008.
Quoting the information published by Arab News, 2016 and 2017 were exceptional years in Turkish-Bahraini relations, as the leaders of the two countries indicated their interest in adding new impetus to bilateral relations.
Through the mutual visits of both King Hamad and Erdogan, many agreements and memoranda of understanding in the fields of defence, culture, education, energy, tourism and economy, were signed.
