Baltic countries are negotiating the purchase of more Israeli made defence systems with focus on missiles for fast patrol boats.
A source in the Israeli defence industry said that there is a clear increase in interest from NATO members and others for longer range precision capability for various vessels from lighter patrol and attack vessels to larger ones. "The interest has always been there but we have seen the pace accelerating, '' he added.
The source was reluctant to be more specific but pointed to one contact that have been signed. This contract is between Lithuania and Israeli company Rafael, with the country
receiving two high-speed vessels equipped with SPIKE NLOS missile launchers and remote-controlled weapon systems. The long range missile has become one of Rafael's bestsellers.
The U.S. Army has equipped its Boeing Apache AH-64 E combat helicopters with the Israeli made Spike Non – Line- Of – Sight (NLOS) missiles. The SPIKE NLOS is combat proven and proved to be an effective tool for both high intensity conflicts (HIC) and low intensity conflicts (LIC) as well. According to Rafael, the Spike-NLOS is one of the most advanced and modern precision weapon system.
The SPIKE NLOS Missile can be fired in LOS to target using the same principals of the other SPIKE Missiles of tracker lock-on and F&F abilities. The main concept of the weapon system includes the capability to fire in non line of sight (NLOS).
The firing to a NLOS target is based on grid coordinates using INS/GPS navigation and ending missile flight in terminal guidance based on the electro optical guidance using missile seeker image transmitted to operator via wireless RF data link. The target coordinates are fed either manually to the SPIKE NLOS system or selected from pre-defined targets or mission data bank.
After launch, the missile flight is according to its automatic navigation algorithm. During flight, manual scan of the target area is possible within the Field of Regard (FOR). Pointing to the target may be resumed any time by pushing a button. Reaching a condition threshold; the missile terminates its automatic navigation. Terminal guidance is either performed by using tracker lock-on or manual steering the seeker.
According to Rafael, the Naval SPIKE NLOS, which is part of the company's family of precision-guided EO missiles, delivers the full force of a complete naval missile system owing to its powerful SPIKE NLOS missiles with electro-optical (E-O) guidance and advanced fire control. The SPIKE NLOS missile enables day and night, all-weather, NLOS target engagement for ranges of up to 32 km – with pinpoint accuracy and minimal collateral damage. Effective in both offensive and defensive naval scenarios, the compact system enables stand-off sea-to-shore fire support or sea-to-sea targeting on a wide range of naval platforms.
