Batik Air will introduce direct flights between Kuala Lumpur and Palembang starting 12 September 2025, expanding the airline's network in Indonesia and adding another route to its Malaysia–Indonesia services.
The new service will be operated using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with both Economy and Business Class cabins. Palembang joins a list of Indonesian cities already served by Batik Air from Kuala Lumpur, including Jakarta, Bali, Batam, Surabaya, Medan, Lombok and Pekanbaru.
Batik Air Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy, said the addition of Palembang reflects the airline’s continued focus on strengthening regional connectivity.
“This new route reflects our ongoing efforts to connect more cities across the archipelago directly to Kuala Lumpur, offering travellers greater flexibility, convenience, and access to global destinations. Kuala Lumpur International Airport is developing into a leading hub for Umrah and international travel, and we’re proud to support this growth by adding more strategic gateways like Palembang to our network,” he said.
Palembang, the capital of South Sumatra, is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest cities and was once a centre of the Srivijaya Empire. Known for its position along the Musi River, the city offers a mix of historical and cultural attractions, such as the Ampera Bridge, floating markets, and traditional songket weaving, along with its signature dish, pempek. In addition to its cultural significance, Palembang is also developing as an industrial and commercial hub.
The new route is intended to provide more travel options for passengers from both countries. For travellers in Malaysia and beyond transiting through Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), it offers easier access to South Sumatra. For passengers from Palembang and surrounding regions, it provides a direct connection to Kuala Lumpur and onward international destinations.
KLIA serves as Batik Air’s primary hub for Umrah travel. In 2024, the airline transported over 120,000 Umrah pilgrims, including many from Indonesia. The new Kuala Lumpur–Palembang service is expected to further support this traffic by improving access to Saudi Arabia-bound flights.
