Baykar Signs Italian Production Deal at SAHA 2026
Turkish aerospace giant Baykar has formalised a landmark agreement with Italian industrial firm Gruppo Esea during the SAHA 2026 International Defence and Aerospace Exhibition in Istanbul. The contract, signed on 7 May 2026, focuses on the establishment of a fully robotic production line for Baykar’s expanding fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles. This technological partnership is designed to streamline the manufacturing process of Turkish platforms, ensuring higher volume output through automated systems. The move comes as Türkiye seeks to solidify its position as a primary global exporter of combat drones while leveraging European high-precision engineering.
The collaboration represents a significant shift in the aerospace manufacturing landscape, moving away from traditional assembly methods toward cost-effective, standardised robotic integration. According to company officials, the new production infrastructure will allow Baykar to meet the surging global demand for its tactical and strategic systems, including the Bayraktar TB3 and the Akinci unmanned combat aerial vehicle. This agreement is viewed as a foundational step in deeper industrial ties between Rome and Ankara, following earlier discussions regarding the potential deployment of Turkish naval drones on Italian maritime platforms.
The signing ceremony was a highlight of the SAHA 2026 expo, which is currently being held from 5 May to 9 May 2026 at the Istanbul Expo Centre. The exhibition, organised by the SAHA Istanbul cluster, has attracted over 1,400 companies and 120 official delegations. This specific Italian deal was part of a broader suite of international agreements signed by Baykar, including a strategic framework with France’s Safran Electronics and Defence and a munition integration contract with the UAE-based EDGE Group.
The partnership aims to enhance the scale of drone production through the implementation of advanced robotics provided by Gruppo Esea. Speaking at the ceremony, Baykar Chief Executive Officer Haluk Bayraktar stated, "the partnership will enable Baykar to achieve automated mass production in higher volumes in a more cost-effective and standardised manner." For the Italian side, the deal underscores a growing reliance on bilateral industrial ventures to maintain a competitive edge in the Mediterranean and European theatre. Gruppo Esea Chief Executive Officer Alessandro Liberatore noted that "the deal marks a strategic milestone in the growing industrial cooperation between Türkiye and Italy."
From the perspective of the Asia-Pacific region, the Baykar-Italy deal serves as a blueprint for rapid defence industrialisation that many Southeast Asian nations are currently pursuing. The integration of Italian robotic precision with Turkish combat-proven platforms provides a viable alternative to traditional Western or Chinese hardware. Countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia, which have already shown significant interest in Turkish unmanned systems, may see this as a signal of increased supply chain stability and potential for future local production ventures.
The broader implications of the SAHA 2026 agreements suggest a multi-polar shift in defence procurement where middle powers are increasingly dominant. By securing high-tech components and production methods from G7 nations like Italy and France, Baykar is insulating its supply chain against geopolitical volatility. This strategy ensures that Turkish-manufactured systems remain available to Indo-Pacific partners who are currently navigating complex maritime security challenges. As the expo concludes, the projected export value of agreements is expected to reach US$8 billion, highlighting the robust commercial trajectory of the Turkish defence sector.
