Baykar and Safran Sign Strategic Cooperation at SAHA 2026
Turkish defense giant Baykar has formalized a strategic cooperation agreement with French firm Safran Electronics and Defense during the SAHA 2026 International Defense and Aerospace Exhibition in Istanbul. The agreement, signed this week at the Istanbul Expo Center, establishes a comprehensive framework for the two companies to collaborate on advanced aviation electronics and electronic solutions for unmanned platforms. This partnership marks a significant integration of European high-tech components into Türkiye's rapidly expanding drone ecosystem, which has seen increasing adoption across the globe.
The collaboration focuses on the development and integration of mission-critical systems designed to enhance the operational reliability and intelligence capabilities of Baykar’s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) fleet. Under the terms of the agreement, Safran will provide expertise in optronics and navigation systems to complement Baykar’s indigenous flight control and airframe technologies. This move is seen as an effort to standardize electronic suites across different platforms to ensure more cost-effective mass production and better interoperability with international standards.
The agreement was one of several major deals finalized during the biennial event, which is organized by SAHA Istanbul, the largest industrial cluster in Europe and Türkiye. Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar emphasized that these partnerships are essential for scaling manufacturing output while maintaining a competitive edge in disruptive technologies. The exhibition, running from May 5 to May 9, 2026, has served as a central hub for Turkish aerospace firms to consolidate their industrial footprint through high-level international engagement.
The deepening ties between Turkish and French defense entities carry significant weight for the Asia-Pacific region, where Baykar has aggressively expanded its market presence. By incorporating French-made electronic solutions, Baykar may provide more versatile options for regional partners who operate within Western-aligned technical frameworks. During the same exhibition, Baykar secured a landmark deal with Indonesia for the export of up to 60 Bayraktar Kizilelma unmanned combat aircraft, with an initial contract for 12 units scheduled for delivery in 2028.
This synergy reflects a broader shift in the global defense supply chain as nations seek to diversify their procurement sources and decrease reliance on traditional superpowers. For Southeast Asian nations, the availability of combat-proven Turkish platforms enhanced by French electronics offers a strategic middle ground. Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar stated during the signing ceremony that "Bayraktar Kizilelma, one of the world's first unmanned fighter jet technologies, made its first flight in 2022," and noted that the company is now focused on achieving automated mass production through these strategic milestones.
