The Indian state-owned Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) signed an agreement on the inaugural day of the airshow with Thales for an initial supply of Laser Beam Riding Man Portable Air Defence systems (LBRM). This initial supply of High Velocity Missiles (STARStreak) and launchers will be delivered this year. “This is a momentous occasion for all the stakeholders involved in the development of LBRM Air Defence solutions. It signifies the beginning of an exciting chapter in our collaboration with BDL, contributing to the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision. The UK-India strategic partnership finds renewed strength through this contract, which is poised to make a significant impact in the domain of air defence in India.” declared Pascale Sourisse, President & CEO, Thales International.
The STARStreak missile system is used by the British Army and international defence forces and is the fastest in its category. Its three laser-guided darts are immune to jamming and can defeat any air target, including armoured helicopters, making it a reliable last line of defence. Thales will also provide a transfer of technology (ToT) to BDL for manufacture of STARStreak missiles in India. BDL will also become a part of the STARStreak global supply chain, providing the opportunity for export of Indian manufactured components to existing and future STARStreak Air Defence customers, including the UK Armed Forces. 60 percent of the weapon system is planned for manufacture in India.
“We are pleased to take our collaboration with Thales to this next significant step, enhancing our contribution to the defence ecosystem and our ability to support existing and future LBRM Air Defence customers. This initiative aligns perfectly with our Government's 'Make in India,' 'ease of doing business,' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' programmes, giving a major boost to the local industry through partnerships with global organisations like Thales.” said Cmde A Madhavarao (retd.), Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Dynamics Limited. BDL and Thales signed a Teaming Agreement in January 2021 to work in partnership on the STARStreak Air Defence system with the support of both the Governments of India and the United Kingdom. Prior to this in 2017 BDL and Thales had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore technology transfer for STARStreak.
The lightweight STARStreak missile is soldier portable and capable of engaging with a wide range of diverse threats including attack helicopters, unmanned aerial systems and light skinned armoured vehicles at a range of 6km. At a speed greater than Mach 3.0, it is the fastest missile on the market among its SHORAD competitors and can be launched from a range of platforms.
