Beaufort Equips 100th JASDF F-35 Pilot, Eyes Sixth-Gen AFE

: May 22, 2025 - : 3:44 am

Beaufort has equipped its 100th Japan Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) pilot with a tailored Aircrew Flight Equipment (AFE) ensemble for the F-35 fighter aircraft, underlining its role in supporting Japan’s participation in the global F-35 Lightning II programme.

As the designated provider of below-the-neck AFE for all F-35 variants, Beaufort supplies equipment designed to enhance pilot safety and survivability. The milestone reflects the company’s continuing contribution to the operational readiness of Japan’s F-35 fleet, particularly in the context of evolving regional defence requirements.

Japan is one of the largest international operators of the F-35, with up to 147 A and B variant aircraft either delivered or on order. The country is also a core member of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP)—a collaborative effort with the United Kingdom and Italy aimed at developing a sixth-generation combat aircraft.

In parallel with the GCAP initiative, Beaufort is advancing the development of sixth-generation AFE technologies. According to the company, these efforts are informed by operational experience and are intended to address emerging requirements for future air combat platforms. The new generation of AFE systems is being designed to support pilot survivability through integrated protection features and user-centred design.

“Reaching this 100-pilot milestone in Japan is a proud moment and an affirmation of our commitment to protecting lives and enabling mission success in high-threat, high-performance environments,” said Nick Mulhall, Chief Commercial Officer at Beaufort. “Our unique Perfect Fit process ensures every pilot receives an individually tailored ensemble that integrates seamlessly with the cockpit with aircraft life support systems meeting the demands of modern multi-domain operations.”

The AFE ensemble consists of items including a flight jacket, coverall, anti-g trousers, and immersion protection garments, all customised during a 10-day, two-stage fitting process at a dedicated F-35 Pilot Fit Facility (PFF). A precise fit is considered essential for performance during demanding conditions such as sustained high-G manoeuvres, where the use of Anti-G Straining Manoeuvres (AGSM) is either reduced or no longer required.

At present, JASDF pilots travel to the United States for fitting. However, Beaufort has indicated it is assessing the feasibility of establishing a local fitting and support capability in Japan. This would add to the company’s existing support infrastructure in the country, which includes servicing Submarine Escape Immersion Equipment (SEIE) for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.

Beaufort’s broader strategy includes continued investment in innovation and expansion of regional partnerships. The company maintains that a focus on quality, timely delivery, and cost competitiveness remains central to its operations.
