BermudAir Orders 10 Airbus A220-300 Aircraft at Farnborough
Bermuda-based carrier BermudAir has formally announced a firm order for 10 Airbus A220-300 passenger jets to accelerate its regional network expansion across North America and the Caribbean. The transaction, which includes purchase rights for an additional 10 aircraft to potentially grow the fleet to 20 units by 2030, represents an estimated list-price investment of approximately US$915 million. Deliveries of the new single-aisle airliners are scheduled to commence in the fourth quarter of 2027 as part of a long-term strategy to modernise operations and progressively replace existing regional regional jets. Furthermore, this strategic agreement marks the first direct aircraft acquisition between Airbus and BermudAir, introducing the A220 family into a specialized island-hopping flight corridor.
The newly ordered A220-300 fleet will feature a 135-seat three-class interior layout designed to cater to premium leisure travelers across international routes. Consequently, the enhanced flight range of up to 3,450 nautical miles will enable the airline to launch non-stop connections between Bermuda, Anguilla, Belize, and major mainland hubs in North America. Moreover, the advanced aerodynamics and Pratt & Whitney Geared Turbofan powerplants will deliver a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per seat compared to previous-generation aircraft. Consequently, these operational metrics provide vital economic insulation against volatile global aviation fuel markets.
According to official press releases issued by Airbus at the Farnborough International Airshow on 22 July 2026, alongside reporting from international news agency Reuters, the agreement was initially logged in the Airbus order book in March 2026 under an undisclosed buyer. Industry watchers noted that the transaction was executed through affiliate entity Odyssey before being formally attributed to the airline during the show. Therefore, this disclosure highlights how niche carriers are leveraging modern narrowbody platforms to build point-to-point networks without relying on legacy hub infrastructure.
To support the expansion, BermudAir plans to more than double its initial 11 routes by adding new direct services to destinations in Central America and the Caribbean. Executive leadership emphasized that the payload and range capabilities of the aircraft are central to opening up underserved thin routes.
"The A220 is the ideal aircraft to support the next phase of BermudAir's growth," said Adam Scott, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of BermudAir. "Its exceptional range, operating economics and performance at constrained airports will allow us to connect more communities across Bermuda, the Caribbean and North America with direct, reliable and convenient air service. Just as importantly, the A220 offers an outstanding passenger experience."
From the airframer perspective, securing new operators in distinct geographical zones demonstrates the versatility of the single-aisle program. Airbus management highlighted that tailored operational models benefit immensely from lower seat-mile costs.
"BermudAir's selection of the A220-300 validates the aircraft's role as a tool for targeted regional development," said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business. "This agreement introduces the A220 to a distinct operational environment in the Atlantic and Caribbean, demonstrating how its efficiency supports tailored business models. We thank BermudAir for their trust in Airbus and look forward to supporting their network expansion."
While BermudAir operates primarily in the Atlantic sphere, its fleet decisions mirror a major strategic shift occurring within the Asia-Pacific commercial aviation ecosystem. Airlines across Southeast Asia and the Pacific island nations are increasingly adopting small narrowbody jets to connect secondary cities without incurring the heavy trip costs of larger twin-engine aircraft. Furthermore, the deal highlights the critical importance of the Asia-Pacific maintenance, repair, and overhaul supply chain. With major propulsion service hubs located in Singapore and Malaysia, regional maintenance facilities play a vital role in supporting global engine reliability for the Geared Turbofan engine fleet. Thus, operational stability in Western hemisphere routes remains inextricably linked to Asia-Pacific aerospace manufacturing and maintenance capacity.
