Boeing 787 Dreamliner Fleet Surpasses 1 Billion Passengers

According to Boeing, the global fleet of over 1,175 787s has completed nearly five million flights, totalling more than 30 million flight hours. The company attributes this milestone to strong customer demand, citing the aircraft's long-range capabilities, operational efficiency, and passenger comfort.

“The 787 Dreamliner family was designed to connect people and places like never before,” said Scott Stocker, vice president and general manager of the 787 programme. “Flying over 1 billion passengers in this relatively short time is a testament to how the airplane has delivered on its promises... To every operator flying the 787 and every one of the 1 billion passengers who have flown on a Dreamliner, thank you.”

Since its introduction, the Dreamliner has become the bestselling widebody passenger aircraft, with more than 2,000 orders from 89 customers. Boeing reports the fleet now operates across over 85 countries and more than 520 airports. It has enabled 425 new nonstop routes, connecting cities that previously lacked direct air service.

The company estimates that 787 aircraft currently operate around 2,100 flights per day, transporting over 480,000 passengers daily—approximately 14.5 million each month. On average, each aircraft in the fleet spends more than 12 hours in the air daily.

Among the routes flown by 787s, the longest is Qantas’ London–Perth service, covering 7,829 nautical miles, while the shortest is TUI’s Aruba–Curaçao route at just 65 nautical miles.

Boeing also stated that the 787 is approximately 25% more fuel efficient than the aircraft it replaces, citing improvements in engine technology, aerodynamics, systems design, and the use of lightweight composite materials.
