Boeing has officially ended its pursuit of the F-15EX fighter jet sale to Indonesia, marking the conclusion of a multi-year effort to supply the Southeast Asian nation with the advanced Eagle II platform. The announcement was made by Bernd Peters, Vice President of Business Development and Strategy for Boeing Defense, Space & Security, at the ongoing show.
Peters confirmed that the F-15EX program for Indonesia is “no longer an active campaign” for the company. This statement effectively terminated the progress of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in August 2023, which had proposed the acquisition of 24 aircraft designated as the F-15IDN. The decision follows a period of increasing silence regarding the deal, as the programme had notably vanished from Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) procurement agendas over the past year.
Defence observers in Indonesia had anticipated this outcome for some time, citing several strategic and financial hurdles. Beyond the high unit cost of the F-15EX, there were significant concerns regarding a potential return to heavy military dependence on the United States. Furthermore, many analysts argued that the heavy fighter’s capabilities would be redundant, as the TNI-AU’s operational requirements are increasingly being met through upcoming combat jet acquisitions and mid-life upgrade programmes for existing platforms.
The cessation of the F-15EX campaign suggests that Jakarta has abandoned the procurement in favour of other assets to bolster its air defence. Indonesia has already secured the acquisition of the Dassault Rafale and is reportedly seeking further alternatives to fill remaining gaps in its aerial capabilities. This shift indicates a broader strategy to diversify the nation’s combat fleet and prioritise platforms that align more closely with current fiscal and strategic priorities.
