The aerospace giant is setting up a new division – Boeing NeXt – to develop the ecosystem needed for safe unmanned flight in the future.  The idea is to drastically reduce the amount of time people waste in traffic by moving people and packages much faster and with less stress.

Apart from focusing in development of autonomous flight vehicles, the division will also focus on modeling smart cities and exploring new market opportunities to solve for the transportation challenges of the future. Greg Hyslop, Boeing chief technology officer, believes that flying vehicles will start operating “in the next few years.”

“I don’t think we are talking decades, said Hyslop at the ongoing Farnborough Air Show as he announced the formation of the division. “I think we are talking few years; we want to bring these vehicles to life in the next few years. I think safety will be the tempo that dictates when this will happen. We can do a lot of things to mitigate risk. There are a lot of problems, but we see the problems as solvable.”

The company will focus on technology development in emerging fields, including AI and hybrid and fully electric propulsion, to make the ecosystem happen. “partnerships, traditional and nontraditional, are key,” said Hyslop,

The aerospace giant is Joining hands with artificial intelligence (AI) company SparkCognition to speed up the process of making safe unmanned flight a reality. The two companies will use blockchain technology and AI to develop an air traffic management system.
