The U.S. Army isn’t considering a successor to the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter, but Boeing officials have already started thinking about a next-generation Apache that would remain relevent for decades.
“We believe we’re going to have to do something with the Apache in the future,” Kathleen Jolivette, Boeing’s vice president for attack helicopters, told reporters at AUSA 2022. “It can’t just remain where it is.”
The U.S. Army is fielding the most recent AH-64E Apache Version 6, which replaces the AH-64D Apache attack helicopters . The AH-64E Apache Version 6 is the final planned modernization of the aircraft.
The company is thinking ahead on its own; there is no pressure from the Army to come up with a new attack helicopter. “The Apache is going to be the US Army’s principal attack helicopter for the next 25 to 30 years. There’s nothing right now that is on the books that’s going to replace the Apache,” said Jessie Farrington, Boeing’s director of attack helicopter global sales and marketing.
According to Farrington, a future AH-64 will have an improved turbine engine and a modular mission system backbone. A modular mission system backbone will allow the service to add different sensors or payloads without any major overhaul of the helicopter.
The General Electric T901, which is part of the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), finished the “first engine to test” (FETT) phase in July and will begin flight tests this fall. The engine will power the Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) and also will also provide improved power, range and fuel efficiency to the Apache and the UH-60 Black Hawk.
