Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner to Resume in the Coming Days, says FAA

Boeing is set to resume deliveries of its 787 Dreamliner aircraft in the coming days with the Federal Aviation Administration granting an all-clear. The company has about 120 Dreamliners awaiting delivery.

American Airlines, which has 43 of the aircraft type on order for use on long-haul international routes, expects to receive its delivery as early as Wednesday. This will be the carrier’s first 787 delivery since April 2021. Once the aircraft joins its fleet, America will have 47 active 787 family aircraft in its fleet with an additional 42 on order. United Airlines is another carrier waiting for deliveries.

American Airlines had said on a July earnings call that it expects to receive nine 787s this year, including two in early August. Boeing said it continues “to work transparently with the FAA and our customers towards resuming 787 deliveries”.

The FAA raised concerns about manufacturing flaws in some 787s following which Boeing suspended deliveries. The agency also issued two airworthiness directives to address production issues for in-service airplanes. The plane maker resumed deliveries in March 2021 after a five-month gap before halting them again in May last year.

In July, the FAA approved the plane maker’s plan for specific inspections to verify the Dreamliner meets requirements and that all retrofit work has been completed.

“Boeing has made the necessary changes to ensure that the 787 Dreamliner meets all certification standards,” the FAA said in a statement Monday. “The FAA will inspect each aircraft before an airworthiness certificate is issued and cleared for delivery.”
