BrahMos Aims to Add Fire Power to Kazakh Su-30s

: May 23, 2018 - : 4:31 pm

With Kazakhstan receiving more Su-30SM multirole fighter aircraft from Russia, India is hoping to sell its air-launched variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile to the Kazakhstan Air Force.

Several “friendly” countries including Kazakhstan have been showing keen interest in the BrahMos missile, which is an Indo-Russia joint venture. The air-launched variant of the Brahmos, the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile, was successfully test fired from a Sukhoi-30 combat aircraft last November, marking a major milestone to enhance the precision strike capability of air forces.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already started work to integrate the BrahMos missile on 40 of its Sukhoi combat aircraft. The 2.5-ton missile flies at almost three times the speed of sound at Mach 2.8 and has a range of 290 km.

“Kazakhstan also operates the Sukhoi’s, and BrahMos missiles can add teeth to its fire power,” a BrahMos official says. The range of the missile can be extended up to 400 km as certain technical restrictions were lifted after India became a full member of the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). Brahmos missile is the heaviest weapon to be deployed on India’s Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft.
