British Airways Selects Pratt & Whitney GTF Engines for Up to 63 Airbus A320neo Aircraft

British Airways has selected Pratt & Whitney's GTF engines to power up to 63 Airbus A320neo-family aircraft, including 33 firm orders and 30 purchase options, in a deal announced at the Farnborough International Airshow 2026.

The agreement, unveiled by RTX's Pratt & Whitney at the biennial airshow, also includes a 12-year EngineWise Comprehensive maintenance agreement designed to improve fleet reliability and reduce long-term operating costs. Engine deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2027.

"British Airways' selection is a strong vote of confidence in the GTF engine," said Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney. He said the geared turbofan engine will support the airline's fleet renewal while delivering greater fuel efficiency and an improved passenger experience.

Pratt & Whitney said its geared turbofan (GTF) engine reduces fuel consumption by up to 20% and cuts the aircraft's noise footprint by up to 75% compared with previous-generation engines, helping airlines lower operating costs and emissions.

The order supports British Airways' ongoing modernization of its short- and medium-haul fleet as airlines worldwide invest in more fuel-efficient aircraft to meet growing travel demand and sustainability targets.

According to Pratt & Whitney, more than 2,800 GTF-powered aircraft are in service with over 90 airlines worldwide, while the engine program has accumulated more than 8,000 orders and commitments.

The company also plans to introduce the GTF Advantage later this year, an upgraded version that is expected to provide longer time on wing, improved fuel efficiency and greater range.

The British Airways agreement adds another major international carrier to the growing list of airlines adopting Pratt & Whitney's GTF engine as competition intensifies in the market for next-generation narrowbody aircraft.
