At the recent Singapore Airshow, Leonardo and ST Engineering showcased a new integrated solution in the land defence system domain that is designed for Counter-Uncrewed Aerial System (C-UAS) applications.
A Terrex 8X8 infantry fighting vehicle that was on display at ST Engineering's exposition area featured a latest generation Leonardo X-Gun 30mm automatic cannon embedded in the vehicle’s turret. The X-GUN represents a cutting-edge, ITAR-free, electric-powered weapon system completely developed by Leonardo, for integration onto both land and naval platforms, utilising innovative and patented technologies to counter both legacy and emerging threats such as UAS and drones.
X-GUN meets and exceeds the most rigorous global defence standards, delivering 30×173 mm rounds with multi-fragmentation Air Burst Munition (ABM) capability in adherence to NATO STANAG 4624 standards at a rate of 200 rounds per minute. To enhance precision, X-GUN offers a sniper mode where the projectile is pre-chambered with the breechbolt nearly closed, minimising vibrations and firing delay for improved accuracy. Additionally, the
weapon incorporates a “first round selection” capability, allowing immediate firing with the selected ammunition without shooting live rounds of the previous type during magazine changes.
Driven by an electrically-powered rotor cam with an X-shaped profile, X-GUN distinguishes itself by minimising movable parts, thereby enhancing reliability. The lateral dual-feeding mechanism ensures a continuous and efficient ammunition supply, and the barrel design incorporates external grooves for optimal cooling during operation.
Specifically designed for Counter-Uncrewed Aerial System (C-UAS) applications, the new 30×173 mm ammunition aims to maximise both precision and terminal effectiveness. Precision is granted by very low dispersion of the gun due to the specific design of barrel, brakes and limited parts in movement during firing action while terminal effectiveness is ensured by an innovative and unique time-delay fuse. Unlike conventional systems, the innovative fuse collects real-time projectile speed data through contactless technology during its journey through the barrel. Managed by the "smart fuse," this data corrects the flight time before detonation, refining the detonation point and enhancing accuracy, ultimately improving the kill probability.
The modular design of X-GUN brings forth a host of advantages in logistics and maintenance. With standardised components applicable across different environments, the system streamlines supply chains, reducing complexities in logistics and ensuring efficient maintenance processes.
