The Chinese aerospace sector has commenced 2026 with a high-cadence launch strategy that signals a shift from purely scientific exploration to established orbital sovereignty and regional infrastructure dominance. Following a record-breaking 2025, the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) has confirmed a manifest exceeding 70 missions for the current year. This aggressive schedule is underpinned by the dual requirements of the Guowang broadband megaconstellation and the fourth phase of the national lunar exploration programme, positioning Beijing as the primary architect of space infrastructure within the Asia-Pacific region.
On 13 January 2026, the year’s operations began with a dual-launch sequence from separate spaceports. A Long March 2C deployed a classified Yaogan reconnaissance satellite from Xichang, while a Long March 8A lifted off from the newly operational Hainan Commercial Space Launch Site. The latter carried nine satellites for the Guowang project, a state-backed network designed to provide global internet coverage and directly compete with Western hyperscale constellations. Industry analysts estimate that the Chinese commercial space market will surpass 2.5 trillion yuan (US$351.76 billion) by the end of the year, driven by this surge in low-Earth orbit (LEO) deployment.
Primary data for this report were sourced from official bulletins issued by the China National Space Administration (CNSA), supplementary launch telemetry provided by the Taiyuan and Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centres, and market analysis from China Daily and others. These reports highlight a strategic decoupling of commercial megaconstellations from legacy military spaceports, utilizing the Hainan facility to achieve the higher turnover rates necessary for modern orbital logistics.
The crown jewel of the 2026 manifest is the Chang’e 7 mission, scheduled for launch in the second half of the year, likely in August. This complex robotic mission is tasked with a precision landing on the illuminated rim of Shackleton Crater at the lunar south pole. The mission architecture includes an orbiter, a lander, a rover, and a novel mini-flying probe designed to 'hop' into permanently shadowed regions to detect water ice. This mission is a critical precursor to the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) and reflects a broader regional competition for lunar resources that involves multiple Asia-Pacific actors.
In late 2026, China is expected to launch the Xuntian space telescope, a large-scale flagship facility for astrophysics. Unlike the Hubble or James Webb telescopes, Xuntian will co-orbit with the Tiangong space station. This proximity allows for periodic docking, enabling astronauts to conduct on-orbit servicing and hardware upgrades, thereby extending the mission’s operational lifespan. Simultaneously, the Tiangong station will host two crewed missions, Shenzhou XXIII and Shenzhou XXIV. These missions are increasingly focused on international participation, with industry insiders suggesting a Pakistani astronaut may join a flight this year, marking a significant milestone for Asia-Pacific diplomatic and scientific collaboration in orbit.
The 2026 schedule also serves as a proving ground for China’s emerging commercial launch sector. While the Long March series remains the workhorse of the state, new-generation commercial rockets such as the Zhuque-3 and Tianlong-3 are progressing toward orbital tests. These vehicles aim to introduce significant cost efficiencies through partial reusability, aiming to match the economic models of private Western providers. As the Asia-Pacific region becomes the fastest-growing market for space services, including disaster monitoring and resilient connectivity, the success of these commercial platforms will be vital for China’s goal of maintaining a self-sustaining and globally competitive space economy.
