China has proposed supplying the Type 052D destroyer to the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) as part of a broader effort to sell its S26T submarine, originally intended for Thailand, complete with submarine launched version of the YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles.
Thailand's order for the S26T submarine from China appears to have been shelved after prolonged negotiations. The primary issue was China's inability to secure German-made MTU diesel engines, as specified in the contract. Instead, China proposed its domestically produced CHD 620 engines, but the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) showed reluctance to accept this substitution.
China has assured the Indonesian Navy that the submarine being offered will not face export restrictions. However, it remains to be seen whether the Indonesian Navy will approve the acquisition. Currently, the Indonesian Navy plans to expand its submarine fleet from four to twelve and acquire four destroyer-class warships as part of its strategic force development plan.
The Type 052D, also known as the Luyang III class, is a guided-missile destroyer equipped with a phased array radar system similar to the Aegis system used by the U.S. Navy. This advanced technology significantly enhances the ship's detection and tracking capabilities, providing a considerable tactical advantage. The destroyer is also equipped with a Vertical Launch System (VLS) capable of deploying various missiles, including surface-to-air, anti-ship, and anti-submarine missiles, making it highly versatile in combat scenarios.
With stealth features designed to reduce its radar cross-section, the Type 052D is claimed to improve its survivability against enemy detection. It also boasts sophisticated electronic warfare and countermeasure systems, enhancing its defence capabilities against a range of threats.
The Type 052D destroyer has a displacement of 7,500 tonnes, a length of 157 metres, a beam of 17.2 metres, and a draft of 6 metres. Built by the Changxingdao-Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, the ship can reach a maximum speed of 30 knots and has a maximum range of 4,500 nautical miles (8,300 kilometres) at a cruising speed of 15 knots.
Manned by a crew of 280 personnel, the destroyer is armed with a 130 mm main gun, 64 VLS cells for HHQ-9 long-range surface-to-air missiles (SAM), YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, and CY-5 anti-submarine missiles. Additionally, the ship is equipped with 24 VLS cells for HQ-10 short-range SAMs.
