China Promotes Export of Y-9E

: May 23, 2018 - : 3:54 pm

China National Aero-Technology Import & Export Corporation (CATIC) is displaying a model of the Shaanxi Y-9E. The four-engine transport is in service with the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF), and is now being promoted to potential customers in the Central Asian region.

Indications from the Kazakhstan Air Force show that the country is looking at buying an unspecified number of military transport aircraft in the near future. Myanmar Air Force is the first foreign customer of Y-9E transport aircraft. A single Y-9 has been exported to Myanmar. Thailand and Venezuela Air Force and some customers in Africa are also looking at buying the aircraft.

The Y-9E, produced by Shaanxi Aircraft Company, is a version of the PLAAF aircraft tailored for export that was first revealed in model form at the last Zhuhai air show. Development of what became the Y-9 began around 2001 under the initial designation of Y-8X. The Y-9E aircraft is an outgrowth of the Shaanxi Y-8, a derivative of the Antonov An-12 that Shaanxi has been building.

The Y-9 has a fuselage stretched to 36.06 m (118 ft, 4 in), uprated FWJ6C engines driving JL-4 propellers with six composite blades, and a six-screen EFIS glass flight deck. The Y-9 is designed to carry 25 000 kg of cargo but can reportedly carry a maximum of 30 000 kg of cargo. The transport aircraft can carry 106 passengers, 132 paratroopers, or 72 stretchers. Alternatively, it can carry two ZLC 2000 airborne combat vehicles, which can be paradropped. The Y-9 can carry various other military vehicles, including light trucks, cargo containers or pallets. The cargo bay has an internal volume of 155 m3. It is fitted with cargo handling rollers and tie-down rings. The rear cargo door serves as a ramp.
